Aline Bastin Photography Contest:
Trains connect places but also people; as such, they have always been a fascinating and inspiring topic for artists. The objective of this contest is to stimulate creativity and to spread a sustainable and safe image of the railways in Europe, showing them as an integral part to a cleaner, smarter and more connected transport system.
The contest is held on an annual basis and seeks to find the 12 best pictures highlighting the modern, environmentally-friendly and human dimensions of railways. Winners each receive a 200 euros prize.
Taking place since 2013, the European Railway Photography Contest was renamed in 2016 in memory of our tragically departed colleague and friend Aline Bastin.
Antonio is a surveying engineer from Croatia who has been doing photography since he was a student. The awarded picture was taken in Slavonia, the agricultural region of Croatia. Antonio found it mesmerising to observe and photograph the trains "sailing" through the golden fields.
Iustin is a student from Romania and has been doing photography for about two years. The awarded picture was taken during a trip through the Adjud - Siculeni route, when he came across the Caracău viaduct, one of the most famous railway infrastructure pieces from the entire country.
Grégoire is a railway timetable maker from France. He loves travelling to discover railway systems and cultures around the world. Grégoire's awarded picture features the Landwasser viaduct in Switzerland and was taken with a long exposure time to reveal the train as an extended light ribbon.
