About the event

Rail is a highly energy-efficient low-carbon form of transport for both passenger and freight which has a significant environmental benefit. Rail only accounts for 3% of CO2 emissions from transport, although it carries 17% of inland freight, and 8% of passengers in Europe.

On Wednesday 10 October 2018, CER and Austrian Federal Railways ÖBB hosted a roundtable discussing Rail – Europe’s climate solution? This event gave attendees a unique opportunity to gain knowledge about the impact of rail business on climate and energy targets. As the European Union reflects on the strategy for long-term EU greenhouse gas emission reductions, the event focused on decarbonisation of the transport sector in accordance with the EU’s commitments in the Paris Agreement.

The keynote speech from the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the EU was followed by a high-level panel debate between European Commission, European Parliament and rail sector representatives. The debate among others addressed the policy areas that could promote modal shift in the upcoming years, boosting the competitiveness of the rail sector while leveraging synergies with other modes.
