DAC4Customers – how shippers benefit from rail freight automation through DAC

Hall B6, room B61 at “transport logistic 2023” in Munich

DB Cargo and the European DAC Delivery Programme (EDDP) are hosting an event at Transport Logistic 2023, the international exhibition for logistics, mobility, IT and supply chain management taking place in Munich from 9 to 12 May.

Imagine rail logistics works like this: no manual coupling, no long hikes along the train, and even no paperwork. Everything runs Digitally, Automated and Connected – facilitated by the Digital Automatic Coupler (DAC). This technical solution will enable the fully digital freight train, allowing for better integration of rail freight transport into today’s supply chains. It will replace manual interventions in rail freight, especially the screw coupler, thus facilitating shippers to load and unload their commodities on longer and heavier trains as today. Trains will be quicker and more flexible to handle before and after departure. DAC should become a door opener for new markets and services, like time-critical goods which are expected to gain an increasing market share in the coming years. And DAC trains will transmit information about their journey, their arrival times and their goods onboard to customers.

The European railway operating community and the rail supply industry are currently working on this challenge. Supported by the European Commission and its Research & Development programme for rail, Europe’s Rail, the rail sector has joined forces and set up a technical project to develop the fully digital freight train. These activities are accompanied by the EDDP, focusing on migration, economic aspects and the exchange with sector stakeholders. This, of course, includes the customers of rail freight transport. For “transport logistic 2023”, shippers from different sectors and regions are invited to present what they expect from DAC and rail freight automation.
