Connecting the high-speed dots: The key to faster, cleaner East-West connectivity

The Central and Eastern European region has a key role to play in the realisation of an EU High-Speed Rail Network connecting all EU capitals and major cities. Working with their partners to the West, rail infrastructure managers in these countries are well placed to help join up the continent's "high-speed islands" and achieve the ambitious targets set out in the EU's Smart and Sustainable Mobility Strategy: doubling high-speed rail traffic by 2030 and tripling it by 2050.

The potential benefits are great both for new passenger markets as well as smoother freight flows on the conventional network. However, as high-speed rail (HSR) projects in Central and Eastern Europe progress, it is important to ensure the best possible conditions for their connection to Western Europe.

In this context and with the revision process of the TEN-T Regulation entering its final stages, MEP Ondřej Kovařík, Jiří Svoboda, CEO of Správa železnic, and CER are organising this event to discuss how best to realise faster, cleaner East-West connectivity, while supporting Europe's rail infrastructure managers to meet new TEN-T requirements.
