Rail transport has a negligible impact on the environment. Nevertheless, one remaining environmental challenge for the European rail sector is noise. This unfortunate side effect of railway operations is a cause for public concern in a number of Member States and a problem that CER members are putting the highest efforts into addressing.

This CER fact sheet outlines the issue of noise pollution and the economics of noise reduction measures, while highlighting the railway sector's strategy to tackle rail freight noise and its key messages to the European policymakers on the solutions to consider.
